Hotels in Phuket concentrate on the west coast, and the district you pick shapes the stay more than the star rating does. Patong holds the densest stock, from inland budget rooms a few streets back to beachfront towers on Thaweewong, and it suits visitors who want everything walkable. Karon and Kata offer the same beach access with a calmer street scene and more mid-range family stock.
North of Kamala the pattern changes to low-rise resorts set well apart, many inside the Laguna complex at Bang Tao or on the quiet stretches at Nai Thon and Mai Khao. Rates move sharply by season: expect the highest prices from mid-December to February, and reductions of a third or more through the green season from May to October. Booking eight to ten weeks ahead is normal for the northwest resorts in peak weeks.
