It has long been the island's most expensive stretch of coast, and the headland road running north towards Bang Tao carries the villa and resort strip locally called Millionaire's Mile.
The beachfront itself was cleared of its former beach clubs in a national reclamation programme and is now largely open sand with limited permanent building. Restaurants, bars and shops sit on the access road and in the small commercial cluster at the top of the hill, with more choice a few minutes north at Cherng Talay and Boat Avenue.
The adjoining Pansea beach to the south sits below two long-established luxury hotels and is reached through their grounds or by boat. Surin is around twenty-five minutes from the airport and twenty from Patong. Swimming is good in high season; the beach shelves sharply and the southwest monsoon produces a strong shore break, so the flag system matters here.
