Phuket carries the widest accommodation range in southern Thailand, from Patong guesthouses to Bang Tao pool villas and low-density northern resorts.
Phuket has more accommodation than anywhere else in southern Thailand, and the choice of area matters more than the choice of property. Patong holds the densest stock and the widest price range, from budget guesthouses on the inland streets to beachfront hotels, and it suits visitors who want everything walkable. Karon and Kata offer a similar spread at a slightly calmer pitch, with more mid-range and family stock.
The northwest is where the low-density and luxury properties sit. Bang Tao, Surin and Kamala carry the resort and pool-villa market, including the Laguna complex at Bang Tao with several hotels sharing a lagoon and golf course. Further north, Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Khao are quieter again, with large resorts set well apart and Sirinat National Park limiting what can be built.
In the south, Rawai and Chalong are strong on long-stay apartments, serviced residences and monthly rentals rather than resort hotels, which is why much of the island's long-stay community is based there. Phuket Town has boutique guesthouses in restored Old Town shophouses and business hotels. Rates swing sharply by season: peak is roughly mid-December to February, with the green season from May to October substantially cheaper.
