Shopping runs from the Central and Jungceylon malls to the weekend night markets, tailors, Old Town boutiques and the island's fresh markets.
The island's larger malls are in and around Phuket Town: Central Phuket, which combines a shopping floor with an aquarium and cinema complex, plus Limelight and the Big C and Tesco Lotus hypermarkets on the bypass road. In Patong, Jungceylon is the main indoor centre, with the Banzaan fresh market behind it.
Markets are the more interesting end. The Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road in the Old Town runs weekly through the late afternoon and evening. The Chillva Market, the Naka weekend market near Central, and the Malin Plaza and OTOP markets in Patong cover street food, clothing and souvenirs. Every district has its own fresh market for produce, fish and prepared food, generally busiest early.
Specialist trades cluster: tailors along Rat Uthit and the Patong side sois, jewellery and pearl shops through Patong and Phuket Town, and independent design, ceramics, textiles and art shops in the restored Old Town shophouses on Thalang, Dibuk and Yaowarat. Boat Avenue at Cherng Talay serves the northwest with delicatessens, homeware and a Friday market. Convenience stores and supermarkets are everywhere; the larger chains are concentrated inland.
