The island's landmarks range from the Big Buddha and Wat Chalong to the Old Town shophouses, the viewpoints and Sirinat National Park.
Phuket's best-known landmark is the Big Buddha, a forty-five metre marble-clad statue on Nakkerd hill above Chalong, visible from much of the south of the island and reached by a winding road off Chao Fa West. Below it, Wat Chalong is the largest and most-visited Buddhist temple on Phuket, with a grand pagoda holding a relic of the Buddha.
The Old Town in Phuket Town is the island's main heritage draw. The Sino-Portuguese shophouses along Thalang, Dibuk, Krabi, Yaowarat and Phang Nga roads date from the tin-mining boom, and several are open to visitors, including the Thai Hua Museum and the Chinpracha House. The Shrine of the Serene Light and the Jui Tui and Put Jaw Chinese temples are within the same few streets.
Viewpoints are a category of their own here. Promthep Cape at the southern tip is the standard sunset stop, with the Windmill viewpoint and Karon viewpoint on the same coastal road. Khao Rang overlooks Phuket Town and Khao Khad looks across the eastern bays. For nature, Sirinat National Park covers the northwest beaches and Khao Phra Thaeo protects the island's last significant rainforest, with the Bang Pae and Ton Sai waterfalls and the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project inside it.
